There Will Be No Return To Normal “For The Foreseeable Future,” According to WHO

"Let me blunt, too many countries are headed in the wrong direction."

  • Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of the World Health Organization recently told the media that there is no returning to the old normal “for the foreseeable future.”
  • Many countries are still seeing an increase in coronavirus cases, with United States and Brazil having the most infections.
  • Ghebreyesus said “the actions of many governments and people” show they are doing things wrong.

As countries continue to battle against coronavirus, World Health Organization (WHO) director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has a sobering reminder for everyone: don’t expect things to go back to normal anytime soon. During a media briefing in Geneva, the official declared “There will be no return to the old normal for the foreseeable future.”

Last Sunday, July 12, WHO received an overwhelming 230,000 new cases of COVID-19. According to the organization, around 80% of the new cases were from 10 countries. 50% were from the United States and Brazil, two countries with the most number of infections and deaths across the world.

During his message, Ghebreyesus pointed out that he thinks a lot of countries are actually “headed in the wrong direction.”

The official said:

“The virus remains public enemy number one, but the actions of many governments and people do not reflect this… Mixed messages from leaders are undermining the most critical ingredient of any response: trust.”

And things are simply bound to get worse if appropriate steps are not taken to address the problem.

“We need to reach a sustainable situation where we have adequate control of this virus without shutting down our lives entirely, or lurching from lockdown to lockdown; which has a hugely detrimental impact on societies,” he added.

While Ghebreyesus also admitted that they are waiting for a vaccine, there should be actions taken in order to save lives and prevent more transmissions.

“It can be done. It must be done,” he said.

Ghebreyesus’ entire speech bis available online via the official WHO website.
