  • Norway has reported a record-setting 54% market share for electric vehicles in 2020.
  • The country has been offering incentives for the purpose of convincing more people to switch to electric cars and to reduce air pollution.
  • The main goal is that by 2025, all cars sold in the market are zero-emission vehicles.

Electric vehicles have officially dominated sales in Norway after setting a record of 54% market share in 2020. Moreover, Volkswagen has also been named as the top manufacturer, selling more electric cars than Tesla in the country for the first time.

According to earlier reports, Norway is aiming that by 2025, every car being sold in the market should be zero-emission. The latest figures indicate that the country is “definitely on track” to hit the goal, said Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) CEO Oyvind Solberg Thorsen.

In 2019, electric cars had a market share of 42%. That jumped to 54% in 2020.

Back in 2015, petrol and diesel cars sold 71%. Fast forward to the present, the number has since dropped to 17%.

Norwegian EV Association general secretary Christina Bu said:

“Our preliminary forecast is for electric cars to surpass 65% of the market in 2021. If we manage that, the goal of selling only zero-emission cars in 2025 will be within reach.“

Norway has 10,000 charging ports available for public use, reported the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association.

The government is utilizing a combination of scientific research and public awareness campaigns to attract more electric vehicle buyers in a bid to minimize air pollution. Furthermore, they are also offering incentives as progressive tax systems make electric vehicles much more affordable compared with their petrol counterparts.

These combined factors have greatly contributed to Norway’s success in promoting electric cars compared with other countries. It’s no surprise that its capital Oslo eventually gained the nickname as the electric vehicle capital of the world.
