"The ones she had lost and the ones she had found, and the ones who had loved her the most."
The second episode of Game of Thrones had several memorable moments, from Arya Stark getting frisky with Gendry to Jon Snow finally telling Daenerys Targaryen that he has a stronger claim to the Iron Throne. Viewers were also blessed with Podrick’s stunning singing voice as he sang about Jenny and her ghosts. But did you know that the song itself foreshadowed what would happen between Jon and Daenerys?
In the episode A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Podrick sang Jenny’s Song, a song that appears in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels. It tells the story of Jenny of Oldstones who fell in love with Prince Duncan Targaryen. Interestingly, their story somehow mirrors Jon and Daenerys’ current situation.
The origins of the song are not actually revealed in the books but it is believed to have been written about Jenny of Oldstones after the death of Duncan Targaryen. Jenny was a mere peasant who had captured the heart of the prince, who immediately abdicated the throne so he can marry her. It sounds a lot like what Jon did when he met Daenerys but also what either of them will need to do in the future.
Granted, people joked about Dany’s reaction when Jon told her they were related. However, there is a good reason why she had reacted that way. Dany had immediately pointed out that they both had a claim to the Iron Throne (although Jon’s claim is stronger) and one of them would have to do what Duncan had done all those years ago. The question is, would Jon willingly reject the throne or will Dany have to stand aside?
Interestingly, Duncan’s story didn’t have a happy ending, either. Although he did turn his back on the throne and marry the love of his life, that life didn’t last very long. The prince, along with his father and several others, were killed at the tragedy of Summerhall. It is believed that Jenny would often visit the same hall to “dance with her ghosts.” Could the same thing happen to Jon and Dany?
That’s certainly something to think about while waiting for the next episode. In the meantime, you can read the lyrics to Jenny’s Song (now dubbed Jenny of Oldstones)and enjoy the music video Game of Thrones made for the Florence + The Machine version of the tune.
High in the halls of the kings who are gone
Jenny would dance with her ghosts
The ones she had lost and the ones she had found
And the ones who had loved her the most
The ones who’d been gone for so very long
She couldn’t remember their namesThey spun her around on the damp old stones
Spun away all her sorrow and pain
And she never wanted to leave
Never wanted to leaveThey danced through the day and into the night
Through the snow that swept through the hall
From winter to summer then winter again
Til the walls did crumble and fall
And she never wanted to leave
Never wanted to leaveHigh in the halls of the kings who are gone
Jenny would dance with her ghosts
The ones she had lost and the ones she had found
And the ones who had loved her the most
