Cycling just got more interesting.
Poland is definitely on the right track when it comes to eco-friendly infrastructure solutions. Citizens were in for a surprise when they received a unique present from the local authorities back in 2016.
The European country has always been highly-praised for being one of the most cyclist-friendly countries in the world. And now, it is giving people more reason to enjoy riding their bikes after it introduced a sun-powered bicycle path that glows in the dark.
The blue cycling strip was done by TPA Instytut Badań Technicznych Sp. z o.o. It is located near Lidzbark Warminski in the north of Poland.
TPA Sp. z o.o. President Igor Ruttmar said:
“The material we used for the track gives light for over ten hours. That means the road can radiate throughout the whole night and reaccumulate light the following day.”
While the luminophores can emit a variety of colors, the engineers picked up a blue color for the path, as they thought it would perfectly match with the surroundings.
If the concept seems familiar, the designers actually took inspiration from Studio Roosegaarde’s “Starry Night” bike lane in Netherlands. However, the technology is not the same since the Dutch lane utilizes LED technology, and this one solely depends on solar power.
The main goal of this path is to make sure bikers will enjoy their ride safely at night. As expected, the bicycle patch has become a tourist attraction not only because of the interesting ghostly blue that it emits in dark but because of the safe bike journey as well.
