These Awesome Chefs Are Turning Rio’s Leftovers Into Meals For The Poor

Slow clap for these fine gentlemen!

An alarming United Nations report tells us that we, humans, waste around 30% to 40% of all the food we produce. Ironically, however, we are also told that there are about 800 million people in the world that suffer hunger on a daily basis.

That’s kind of sad, isn’t it? Well fortunately, some people are doing something to reduce the number for both.

In the ongoing Rio Olympics, to be specific, some chefs have joined forces to turn leftovers into something useful.

Massimo Bottura, who manages a 3-Michelin-star in Italy, is working hand in hand with David Hertz, a popular Brazilian chef, to cook the wasted food into meals for the homeless. With the help of a few others, the duo is able to produce 5,000 meals per day from the leftovers – which is a lot of food for the city’s poor to enjoy!

Chefs Massimo Bottura and David Hertz are working together to feed the hungry by using Rio Olympics leftovers.

According to Bottura and Hertz, they were inspired by Refetterio Ambrosiano, an initiative that brought together 65 chefs from various countries to cook for the homeless. The food they produced were donated by the Milan World Expo.

“We want to fight hunger and provide access to good food,” said Hertz.

Hertz shared:

“RefettoRio Gastromotiva is going to work only with ingredients that are about to be wasted, like ugly fruit and vegetables, or yoghurt that is going to be wasted in two days if you don’t buy it.”

“We want to fight hunger and provide access to good food.”

Hertz assured that he and Bottura will continue with the project even after the Olympic games are done. Furthermore, he’s aiming to provide vocational training for those who can’t afford it.

Kudos to these two awesome chefs!
