Girl Feels Extreme Pain Each Time She Goes Out, Turns Out She’s Allergic to Sunlight

Her mom didn't know what causes her to cry in pain every time she goes out to play. Turns it was because she was allergic to the sunlight.

Kids are meant to play outside — to get dirty, explore the world and feel the warmth of the sun on their skin. It is through these types of active play that their gross motor skills, imagination and early life experience are enhanced. But for Savannah Fulkerson, it isn’t the case.

When Savannah was four years old, her parents noticed that every time they go out on the beach or set out on a trip, it will only take a minute or two for Savannah to start wailing in pain. She had to get inside and drench herself in cool water as soon as possible for she feels an excruciating burning feeling all over.

She and her parents had her checked in the hospital but no one could diagnose and subsequently give her an effective treatment. But after five years of searching, one doctor was finally able to identify her condition. Savannah was diagnosed to have Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), which is a rare dermatologic disorder, characterized by extreme pain and blisters due to sunlight exposure. That’s right, Savannah is allergic to the sun. This means, she can’t go out when the sun is shining bright or when her friends invite her to an outdoor pool party.

We admire Savannah for having such a positive and sweet disposition amidst her condition as it is uncommon for kids nowadays to have that positive attribute. We hope doctors find a cure for EPP soon so that kids diagnosed with the disorder may enjoy their childhood to the fullest.
