As if studying at Harvard Law School wasn't enough, this woman even defied the odds by taking up her final exams while in labor.
Beating the odds of life is a skill that can be learned through parenthood. The task becomes even more daunting for those who are forced to face it alone.
But as a single mother studying for one of the most intellectually challenging professions, Briana Williams has proven to be an inspiration for people who have given up their dream careers because of life’s unexpected twists.
The day after her graduation, the 24-year-old shared her story via an Instagram slideshow. She recounted all her hardships while she was taking up her Juris Doctor Degree at the Harvard School of Law Center for Legal Profession, including the time when she went in labor while taking her final exam for Family Law.
Briana said that she immediately sought an epidural when she took the test to avoid her contractions from interfering with her grade.
In her Instagram post, Briana admitted that she wasn’t sure that she was going to make it after experiencing what she dubbed as “one of the most intellectually rigorous and challenging positions of [her] life.”
“It was hard. It hurt. Instagram can make peoples’ lives seem seamless, but this journey has been heart-wrenching,” she wrote.
Like any other single parent, she also struggled with reliable childcare. She even got to the point where she would walk around the Harvard campus with her newborn in tow. It might even be safe to say that her little one is probably the youngest to ever attend law classes in the famed university.
Despite all these obstacles, she endured. Briana, who was initially an unknown law student pregnant with her first child, is now considered an inspiration for many single mothers aspiring to reach their dreams.
“I did well that semester. Every semester I did really well,” she told TODAY.
“There are some things in life that happened to us that are unfortunate but we shouldn’t let external circumstances dictate how we use them to move forward.”
According to the outlet, she is now preparing for the bar exams in July while working for the litigation department of a major firm in Los Angeles. Briana Williams not only imparted inspiration for her Instagram followers, she also wrote a heartwarming message for her baby, Evelyn:
“They said that because of you I wouldn’t be able to do this. Just know that I did this BECAUSE OF YOU. Thank you for giving me the strength and courage to be invincible. Let’s keep beating all their odds, baby.”
