Everyone in Israel just stopped whatever they were doing when they heard the chilling sound of the siren.
It would be an understatement to say that the holocaust, which happened during the WWII was a tragic event. Approximately six million innocent Jewish men, women, and children were ordered to be executed (mostly in gas chambers) by the German Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler.
The Jews were separated from their families, stripped off of their possessions, and were forced to live inhumanely in concentration camps where starvation, sickness, and death befell them.
Now, only the memories of that war depicted by movies such as the Schindler’s List, The Boy in Stripped Pajamas, or books like Anne Frank, remind the people across the globe of that horrendous event.
But for the people of Israel, that dark period in their history still live in the hearts and minds of their people. Every year, on the 27th day of Nisan according to the Hebrew calendar, the Jews commemorate “The Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day” otherwise known as “Yom HaShoah”. This event was inaugurated in 1953 by the then Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. Holocaust Day became a national memorial day and public holiday in Israel.
An air raid siren sounds all throughout the country and the people would stop and spend a minute in silence to reflect on the significance of the holocaust.
In the video, you’ll hear the chilling sound of the siren and see how the people stopped, even in the busy highway to get out of their cars and pay respect to all the lives that were lost during that war.
