Snow White Banned from Qatari School Library For Being “Indecent”

Once upon a time, there was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and they were available in libraries all over the world. Now, the fairytale which was based on Disney’s classic film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs copy has been forever banned in a private school library in Qatar.

The SEK International School Qatar has decided to remove the popular Disney fairytale from its library when a parent complained that it was culturally inappropriate and full of sexual innuendos which are not good for the kids. The parent was outraged that the book was easily available for the children to read when its content was not suitable for young children.

Disney classic Snow White is no longer available at the SEK International School Qatar.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Disney classic, Princess Snow White who was forced to leave her castle by her evil stepmother, befriended the Seven Dwarfs and lived with them. One day, she eats a poisonous apple from her evil stepmother who transformed herself into an old hag. Snow White falls into a deep slumber to be woken up with a kiss from a handsome prince.

According to the school principal of SEK International School Qatar, Vivian Arif, “SEK International School Qatar is proud to be established in this country and presents its formal apologies for any offense that this unintended situation may have caused,” she stated to Doha News. The school took the matter seriously and ensured that no child would read a copy of the book while at SEK International School Qatar ever again.

A parent complained that the book contained sexual innuendos and was culturally inappropriate.

According to The Guardian, censorship of sexual and obscene content is normal in Qatar. They had banned all showings of the movie “The Danish Girl”, a British film that talks about the story of a transgender protagonist.

Schools in Qatar must adhere to the rules and regulations set by the SEC. According to the SEC website, one of its primary objectives is to observe “international best practices, while preserving and taking into account the Islamic values and local traditions.”
