Talk about going the extra mile!
Being able to make a difference in someone else’s life does not have to be expensive, utterly grand and magical. As long as you do it from the heart, people will see and appreciate even the simplest acts.
One Starbucks barista sure knows how to make her customer smile in the simplest yet most touching way. This is because she learned sign language just so she could accommodate one of their regular customer who is deaf.
Customer Ibby Piracha went to his usual branch of Starbucks one Friday afternoon for frapuccino. While there is nothing extraordinary with this routine, he was taken aback when one familiar barista greeted him and asked for his order using American Sign Language.
Ibby usually pre-type his order in his mobile phone or send a text message to the barista on duty. That time, he did not need to for someone who completely understands him was behind the counter.
The barista even left a touching note for Ibby, who later posted it in his Facebook page.
Here is the sweet note:
The barista behind the sweet gesture is Krystal Payne, a 24-year-old woman who reportedly watched YouTube videos over and over just to learn sign language.
“My job is to make sure people have the experience they expect, and that’s what I gave him,” she said.
Ibby hopes that Payne’s gesture would raise awareness about the deaf community. He said on Twitter that normal people do not need to communicate with them in a loud and overly animated way. Deaf people can actually read lips so they don’t need to be talked to like they are mentally challenged.
Wow, that barista is surely an inspiration. We think the message is for us to try and go the extra mile for the service of others. More than doing her job, she helped inspired many people and that we think, is the most rewarding feeling.
