Riot Games, however, denies the allegations.
Riot Games is currently being accussed of stealing a woman’s likeness in creating one of their video game characters. According to a certain Stephanie, League of Legends’ Seraphine bears striking smiliarities not only on her name but also her looks.
According to Stephanie (whose full name has not been disclosed), she briefly worked as an employee for the gaming company back in 2019 and she believes the fictional Seraphine is based on her.
During the same year, she met “John”, a co-worker she played League of Legends with. He later floated the idea of having skins for Ahri, her favorite character from the game, based on her appearance. Stephanie later told John not to go ahead with the idea because she worried he was moving too fast. His response? “He ended things and blocked me,” she wrote on Medium.
Much to Stephanie’s surprise, she eventually saw character drawings for Seraphine and noticed that, just like her, she has colorful hair, an eyeglass, and a pet cat.
“I’ve felt really grossed-out about it, to the point that I can’t play one of my favorite videogames,” she confessed. “Besides that, it’s been kind of horrid to have a League champion who looks like you, has so many of your characteristics, and has a NAME that’s almost identical to yours. People I’ve never met send her to me online and point out the similarities.”
Riot, however, strongly denies any connection between the woman and their character.
In an emailed statement, the company told PC Gamer:
“Seraphine was independently created by Riot Games and was not based on any individual. Additionally, the former employee [Stephanie] is referring to left Riot more than a year ago and was in a department and role that has no input whatsoever into the creative design process.”
