Mario Is NOT A Plumber, According To Nintendo

Mario is undoubtedly one of the most popular video game characters in the world. Aside from being the star of the best-selling franchise video game franchise of all time, he also enjoying fame as Nintendo’s official mascot. 

To this day, the character continues to be relevant now since his first appearance as Jumpman in Donkey Kong way back 1981. He’s probably the planet’s most prominent plumber, right? Well apparently, no.

According to the official Nintendo website, Mario is NOT a plumber.

In a mind-blowing (and childhood-ruining?) revelation, the official website of Nintendo Japan recently told us that Mario is no longer the adventurous plumber we’ve known him to be. While the job still remains part of his history, the company has updated his profile and has already removed the title.

As translated by Kotaku, Mario’s profile describes him as “all around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing.” It also mentions that the iconic hero “does everything cool.”

So while it does indicate that Mario likewise “seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago,” it really just makes older fans feel, well, old. The times they are a-changin’ indeed!

Apparently, Mario wasn’t always a plumber in the first place.

Of course, hardcore gamers will be quick to point out that Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario’s creator, has previously said that the character was “basically a carpenter” back in his Donkey King days because that the game’s setting was a construction site.

In an interview with Today, Miyamoto explained:

“With (1983’s) Mario Bros., we brought in Luigi and a lot of the game was played underground so we made him to fit that setting and, we decided he could be a plumber.

“The scenario dictates his role.”

In his different video game appearances, Mario has been a carpenter, a golfer, a soldier, a race car driver, a tennis champion, and many more!
