Surgeon Finds 27 Missing Contact Lenses Inside Woman’s Eye

For those who are wearing contact lenses, it’s very easy to misplace them and sometimes, you might wonder where you’ dropped it and how did it get lost. A 67-year-old woman got the shock of her life when a surgeon found all her 27 missing contact lenses jumbled together inside her eye.

The woman was about to undergo cataract surgery when her ophthalmologist Rupal Morjaria discovered a bluish mass inside her eye. Much to the surgical team’s surprise, they found a clump of 17 contact lenses and as the surgery went on, they found an additional 10 contact lenses inside the woman’s eye.

How did all those contact lenses get stuck inside her eyes without her noticing?

Morjaria told CNN:

“We were all shocked. We’ve never come across this.”

According to the patient, she has worn disposable lenses for over 35 years and never felt any discomfort in her eye. However, she admitted she felt more comfortable when the clumps of contact lenses were removed. She also has a cataract that needed to be removed but the procedure was postponed for the meantime after the discovery of the contact lenses, Optometry Today reports.

She also thought that the slight discomfort was just because of dry eyes and old age. The discovery was part of a study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) to raise awareness about eye health especially with the use of contact lenses.

Morjaria added:

“Because she had harbored these contact lenses in her eye for an unknown length of time, if we had operated she would have had a lot of bacteria around her conjunctiva.”

The reason the woman’s case was published in a paper is to warn the public about the health risks of wearing disposable contact lenses. Though there are some cases where the contact lenses got stuck on someone’s eyelids, finding clumps of several inside the eye is seemingly rare.
