One of the last things you would expect to happen to you as you casually cross the road is for the ground to swallow you whole. But that’s exactly what took place when a 19-year-old was waiting to walk across the road. The incident was captured on video.

Laura ViIlarinho was suddenly swallowed by a huge sinkhole that suddenly opened up on a street in Uberlandia, Brazil. Her mother was walking beside her when it happened.

As the pair stepped unto the central reservation, the ground opened up and she immediately disappeared into the hole. Her horrified mother began to scream, attracting the attention of strangers who rushed by to help.

Laura was given a series of tests and showed that she suffered a torn ligament on her left elbow. Thankfully, she was not seriously hurt and was discharged the same day.

The local authority water and sewage treatment gave a statement saying that the hole was caused by the rupture of an underground drain. Combined with heavy rainfall, it may have led to small cracks that led to a subsurface erosion.

There have been lots of sinkhole incidents happening recently, which made people very curious why these form in the first place. These are essentially any hole in the ground caused by an erosion and the drainage of water. They can be just a few feet across or massive enough to swallow buildings.

Sinkholes occur in areas of land where limestone, gypsum, and other soluble bedrock can be dissolved by water. As bedrocks become exposed and worn down, the holes get filled by water, transforming them into ponds.
