"Oh my _ god," Elon Musk exclaimed.
Expectations were definitely high with Tesla’s latest vehicle, the Cybertruck, which CEO Elon Musk described as “an armored personal carrier from the future.” But things didn’t go as well as it should be when the vehicle’s armored glass windows got smashed at the launch event in California.
After proving the strength of the Cybertruck’s door panels (which are made of the same alloy materials used on spacecrafts) by having people strike them using sledgehammers, Elon Musk invited someone to throw a small metal ball at the vehicle’s window.
“Oh my _____ god,” Musk exclaimed.
“Well, maybe that was a little too hard. It didn’t go through, so that’s a plus… room for improvement,” he added.
He decided to give it another go by doing the same to another window, which suffered the same fate as the first.
Earlier, a video demo showed how the vehicle can withstand bullets. It was “literally bulletproof to a 9mm handgun. That’s how strong the skin is,” Musk said.
The rest of the presentation fortunately went well, as videos were shown the Cybertruck outperforming a Porsche 911 in speed and a Ford F-150 truck in towing.
The Tesla Cybertruck sports a triangular, iconoclastic shape. Official battery sizes are yet to be disclosed, but during the presentation, it was disclosed that the single-motor based model has a 250-plus miles, while the dual-motor version has 300-plus miles. The tri-motor model has more than 500 miles.
There is no official word yet on when the Cybertruck will be released, but pre-orders have already opened, starting at $39,900 for the most basic model.
Observers say that the vehicle will unlikely be released before 2022. This certainly gives Elon Musk more than enough time to fix the windows.
