And you thought Shaggydog was an odd name.
A lot of people might not be happy with the way Game of Thrones Season 8 ended. However, it looks like the fate of the Stark children had been foreshadowed a long time ago. In fact, the names of their direwolves somehow revealed just what will happen to each Stark kid in the end.
In the first episode back in Season 1, Ned Stark came across a stag that had been killed by a direwolf, which also died from its injuries. Ned takes in the direwolf’s pups, which he presented to his children. Amazingly, each Stark child gave their direwolf a name that would foreshadow their future.
The eldest Stark son seemed destined for greatness. He was only 19 when he was named King in the North as he led several successful battles. Unfortunately, Robb also chose to name his loyal direwolf Grey Wind.
Like wind, Robb became a strong presence that affected everyone around him. However, just like wind, he was gone as quickly as he arrived. Robb was killed along with Grey Wind at the Red Wedding.
The unfortunate Lady was the first direwolf to be killed on the series. However, her name may have predicted that Sansa would eventually become the Lady of Winterfell AND Queen in the North.
You can certainly trust Arya to choose the most fabled name for her own direwolf. Nymeria is named after the legendary Rhoynar warrior-queen who once led her people to Dorne.
Like the Rhoynar queen, Arya took to the seas to discover new territories. While Nymeria found Dorne, Arya’s discovery could be something completely different.
Poor Summer. Although he did his best to protect Bran for several seasons, the direwolf was killed by wights in Season 8. Nevertheless, his name may have confirmed that Bran would survive the threat of the Long Winter and become the symbol of Summer coming upon Westeros.
It’s an unusual name for a direwolf but Shaggydog always did his best to keep Rickon safe. Unfortunately, both of their fates were decided by the wolf’s name as their story arc became a long-winding and pointless shaggy dog of a tale.
Like Robb, Jon seemed destined for greatness after he overcame all odds and kept getting important titles throughout the several seasons of Game of Thrones. However, it all ended with Jon joining the Freefolk and becoming a ghost who existed Beyond the North.
