Starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon, The Queen’s Gambit has risen to popularity that it actually managed to set a new record on Netflix. According to reports, the 7-episode mini series has attracted a record-setting 62 million household viewership in just 28 days. Furthermore, it ranked as the #1 Netflix series in 63 different countries.
The drama follows the story of Beth Harmon who finds out she has an “astonishing talent for chess and begins an unlikely journey to stardom while grappling with addiction,” the Netflix summary tells us.
Based on an original 1983 novel of the same title by author Walter Tevis, the series’ success has also sparked a massive interest in chess as a game. As Netflix shared on Twitter, Google searches for “how to play chess” actually “hit a nine-year peak.”
It has likewise boosted sales of the book that it “entered the New York Times bestseller list 37 years after its release.”
