So, here's what's new in Tiffany & Co. jewelry for 2021.
Tiffany & Co. unveiled what is believed to be its most expensive diamond jewelry design—for a necklace that will feature Tiffany’s second-largest diamond, an 80-carat D-color oval diamond sourced from Botswana, Africa—in preparation for the upcoming reopening of its Fifth Avenue flagship store in January 2022.
In an announcement, Tiffany & Co. said that they are creating a reimagined version of a celebrated archival high jewelry necklace from Tiffany’s 1939 World’s Fair collection. It is expected to be their most expensive piece for sale, fetching a price in the eight-figure range, which will be no lower than $10M.
“What better way to mark the opening of our transformed Tiffany flagship store in 2022,” says Victoria Reynolds, chief gemologist at Tiffany & Co. She said that the incredible necklace from the 1939 World’s Fair became one of their most celebrated pieces since they opened their doors.
Like the original necklace, which featured a 200-carat aquamarine surrounded by a fountain of 429 diamonds, this new necklace will also have a sizable gem—this time an 80-carat diamond—to entrance millions of visitors. As with the original necklace, the latest masterpiece will set the stage for a similar historic moment for the brand—the opening of its iconic flagship store on 57th Street and Fifth Avenue.
While the original Tiffany’s masterpiece may have been conceptualized over eighty years ago, the new necklace will have a modernized design to showcase a recent acquisition, says the house’s chief artistic director, Reed Krakoff.
Tiffany & Co., as an established brand, has seen rare and remarkable gemstones throughout its 183-year history. Still, this 80-carat diamond for the new Tiffany masterpiece is by far the second-largest diamond they have ever had. It is eclipsed only by the legendary Tiffany Diamond, one of the world’s largest and finest yellow diamonds acquired by Tiffany from an auction of the French Crown Jewels.
The stunning 80-carat diamond was internally flawless. It was a rare gem, responsibly and sustainably acquired from a mine in Botswana, Africa. Believed to be a symbol reflective of Tiffany’s industry-first approach to diamond traceability, it will be set into the new necklace by Tiffany artisans in New York City.
According to Reynolds, the new necklace will also “reflect [Tiffany’s] brand heritage as a New York luxury jeweler” founded by the ‘King of Diamonds.’
“The recreation of an Art Deco-inspired necklace from the 1939 World’s Fair speaks to our heritage as America’s preeminent luxury jeweler.”
On top of its incredible rarity origins in Botswana, the stone will bear the distinction of being the most expensive jewel in Tiffany’s history as a luxury jeweller, as the Tiffany Diamond has never been offered for sale. As of writing, its price and name are yet to be publicly revealed.
