This University of Syracuse professor decided to save rare fruit-bearing trees by combining them into one tree that bears 40 fruit!
Have you ever wished you could grow a plant that produces multiple fruits? While this is entirely possible, Syracuse University professor Sam Van Aken has taken it up a notch by growing a tree that can produce up to 40 kinds of fruits. He calls it the Tree of 40 Fruits.
He started off by experimenting and hybridizing the rare varieties of fruit he had saved from an orchard in New York. He did this by grafting parts of the many kinds of fruit trees onto a single tree. These grafted branches then grew to become part of the main tree, while still producing their original fruit. Alongside this, the trees would also bloom numerous multicolored flowers in the spring.
“First and foremost I see the tree as an artwork,” Sam Van Aken said, “I want the tree to interrupt and transform the everyday. When the tree unexpectedly blossoms in different colors, or you see these different types of fruit hanging from its branches, it not only changes the way you look at it, but it changes the way you perceive [things] in general.”
As of now, Sam Van Aken has grown 16 of these hybrid trees that are dispersed all throughout the United States in museums, community centers, and private art collections.
Tree grafting is an ingenious yet doable means of creating your own hybrid trees, and it’s not that hard to do! You can follow in Sam Van Aken’s footsteps and create your very own hybrid tree!
