Quilting is a gift that you give to yourself - and to others.
The bright morning sunshine bathes my room, as I gently wake up to the sound of birds singing. I slowly amble out of bed to look out my window and gaze at the beautiful horizon, right where the water meets the sky. Oh, how I love living beside the sea. I yawn sleepily and thank God for a new day. My stomach grumbles, so I mildly nudge my sleeping husband to wake him up so we can have our breakfast.
This is how I have imagined my retirement to be – living a peaceful life with my husband of 50 years in a lovely home beside the sea. I believe most of us have imagined what it would be like to be retired. With life offering thousands of choices, there’s just a myriad of possibilities.
However, for Trudie Hughes-Sontoski, there was just one possibility – and she made sure that it would happen.
Trudie used to own a quilt shop, but she retired seven years ago. However, retirement did not stop her from doing what she loves – quilting. Her nimble hands produce two quilts a day; that’s a total of about 60 quilts in a month. What’s really awesome about her work is that each quilt has its own unique design.
“I love the whole process. I’m working on one and I’m thinking of ‘Oh, my gosh, next time I’ll do this!‘” says Trudie.
If that fact does not amaze you, wait ’til you hear who she’s quilting for. For ten hours a day, seven days a week – for five years now, she has been sewing quilts for La Causa Crisis Nursery and Respite Center in Wisconsin. Each time Trudie finishes sewing a bundle, she and her husband drive to the center to deliver the quilts.
Trudie reminds us that kindness and compassion go a long way. One act of kindness may not mean a lot to you, but it might mean the world to the other person. Similarly, one quilt may not be of significance to others, but for the kids in the center, it might mean a whole lot more than what we can imagine.
Please tell us what you think about this awesome act of kindness, and share this inspiring story with your friends on Facebook!
