Men are not permitted to enter here.
TikTok may not be the first thing to pop on people’s minds when searching for educational content but yes, there are some gems out there. Case in point, TikTok user @themelomoon took it upon himself to share about the world’s first all-women village found in Kenya.
Founded in 1990 by Rebecca Lolosoli, Umoja serves as a sanctuary for abused women. She came up with the concept while she was hospitalized after being assaulted by men when she stood up for women’s rights.
While the village accommodates women and their children, Umoja implements a strict rule: no men are allowed to live there – not even their boyfriends.
The community is home to women who are victims of rape and violence, including those who managed to escape forced marriage and female genital mutilation.
Expressing her opposition against child marriages, Umoja academy school head Malika pointed out:
“If a girl is married at an early age, that girl will not be a competent parent. Giving birth they face a lot of challenges: they rupture, they bleed, because they are young. Even performing their duties, their chores, it is hard for them. They are thrown into taking care of animals.”
To earn a living, the women create and sell handmade jewelry. Tourists also pay a fee to enter the village.
“Outside, women are being ruled by men so they can’t get any change,” an elderly woman named Seita Lengima said. “The women in Umoja have freedom.”
