"It doesn't matter what you've achieved in the course of your life: The first thing that some people will judge you on is the color of your skin."
Edward Enninful made history in 2017 after becoming the first Black editor-in-chief for Britain’s Vogue Magazine. The unfortunate fact, however, is that he still encounters discrimination to this day.
In fact, Enninful took it to social media to share how he has been “racially profiled” by a security officer as he made his way to the publication’s office. According to the editor himself, he was stopped at the main entrance and asked to enter through the loading dock instead – treating him as if he was a delivery man.
He wrote about the experience on Instagram and Twitter, saying:
“Today I was racially profiled by a security guard whilst entering my work place. As I entered, I was instructed to use the loading bay.”
“It just goes to show that sometimes it doesn’t matter what you’ve achieved in the course of your life: The first thing that some people will judge you on is the color of your skin,” he lamented.
Condé Nast, the publisher of Vogue, took immediate action and dismissed the guard, placing him under investigation.
The post eventually gained a lot of attention online and many have since expressed support to the 48-year-old editor from netizens and colleagues in the industry.
Through the years, Enninful has established a reputation for supporting models of color. Diversity has always been his battle cry.
Enninful was born in Ghana and later grew up in West London. He has been named as Britain’s sixth most influential Black person in the yearly Powerlist 2020.
