Guy Spends Almost A Year Gluing 42,000 Matches To Make Giant Sphere Then Set It On Fire

While some of us love the idea of doing something we love, others are more about doing anything random. One day, a guy, who is known as wallacemk or simply Wallace, was playing around with matches. All of a sudden, an interesting thought came to his mind and he felt the need to follow it.

A couple of months later, his project took over the Internet. Wallace said the entire thing, which is basically a giant sphere composed of 42,000 matches, cost him around $500. Although gluing them altogether proved to be a rigorous task, it did not discourage him from completing the project. And do you know the next big thing he did? He set it on fire!

Hailing from Upstate New York, Wallace spent almost a year on his “out of the blue” project.

The idea came after he was playing around matches one day, wondering why the heads are larger than the bodies.

Before he finally decided to jumpstart the project, he needed to know first if it was going to break his bank.

Fortunately, it did not. Otherwise, this 42,000 match sphere would have been nothing.

If all matches are created equally (which they are not) then I would get a circle comprised of 439 matches that is 17.643″ in diameter.

He would spend hours after hours just analyzing every detail.

But, according to him, the hardest part was gluing all the matches together.

Interestingly, the workaround to make the work a bit faster was to align all matches and apply glue at once.

He is said to have used more or less 300 boxes.

The gluing got harder when he was about to stuff matches on each curve.

Wallace even kept all the boxes to remind him of his project.

And voila! He finally achieved it.

There is a reason why he has this huge smile on his face.

Apparently, to take the project to full circle, he had to set the sphere on fire.

You can say that this 42,000 match sphere project was a random thing. Well, that is because it is. Still, kudso to Wallace!
