There's no more need to spend on expensive monthly gym fees or slimming pills as new study claim that horror movies can help you lose weight.
After seeing the “Paranormal Activity” or the “Exorcist,” you probably never want to see another horror movie and stay up all night for a week. But if you need some cheap and natural slimming down remedy, then you may want to gather more bravery and see more horrifying, supernatural and massacre films.
A survey has been done by a group of researchers at the University of Westminster to find out the advantageous effects of watching horror movies. Surprisingly, they found out that some of the benefits of binge-watching frightening movies include burning calories and boosting people’s moods.
These benefits come with a condition though. They can only be achieved depending on how scary you find the film you are watching and how much you actually want to be scared.
The researchers reportedly engaged ten people to watch ten horror films. During the marathon, they monitored the participants’ heart rate, oxygen intake and output of carbon dioxide.
From the data they collected, they found out that exposing people to scary stimuli caused them to release adrenaline. This factor, according to the author of the study, Richard Mackenzie, triggers the nervous system’s fight-or-flight response.
Subsequently, when the adrenaline is triggered, the body starts to burn fats stored for energy and releases blood sugar. Furthermore, adrenaline forces the body to boost metabolism causing one to burn sugar without the need for oxygen. All of which are natural ways to lose a few pounds.
But weight loss is not the only benefit you can enjoy from watching horror movies. In a separate study, published by the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, researchers revealed watching scary films also causes the body to release more white blood cells. And like most of us know, while blood cells allow people to fight infections and temporarily boosts immune function.
Furthermore, feeling frightened over a horror movie can actually improve a person’s mood! As much as this sounds counter-intuitive, sociologist and fear researcher and author of “Scream: Chilling Adventures In the Science of Fear,” Margee Kerr, claims it to be true. She explained how one can feel less anxious and frustrated, and happier after seeing a scary film. She added:
“The research my colleagues and I have done shows a high-arousal negative stimuli improves mood significantly.”
The thing you have to keep in mind about these benefits though is that you can only see results when you chose to be frightened over a film. So you need to have a strong heart and conviction if you are really determined to try out this new weight loss regime.
