It costs more than the average single-family home.
Rapper Drake’s home in Toronto was recently featured in the cover story of Architectural Digest. As expected, the 50,000 square-foot mansion is the lavish splendor that you would expect from someone like Drake.
Some of the highlights: There’s a Bösendorfer grand piano that was custom-made by artist Takashi Murakami, a 20,000-piece Swarovski crystal lighting installation, and a two-story closet filled with Hermès Birkin bags that the rapper has been collecting for “the woman he ends up with.”
But this was not the most fascinating amenity in Drake’s residence. It’s his mattress, which costs an eye-popping $390,000 price tag. Yep, you read that right.
$390,000.
For a mattress.
Of course, you would naturally want to know how a mattress has such an outrageous price tag. It weighs half a ton and has been handcrafted with details such as golden brass accents and shagreen leather corners.
Called the “Grand Vividus,” this super premium mattress is created via a collaboration between luxury Swedish mattress-maker Hästens and designer/artist Ferris Rafauli. So Drake was the first person ever to score this mattress, which is the only piece that has been delivered at present.
It’s practically a museum piece. This is definitely not a mattress you can find at a strip mall or your basic furniture store. The Hästens store where Drake probably ordered his mattress is located in Beverly Hills.
What really makes it so pricey is the materials – each mattress from Hästens has horsehair, along with other natural materials such as cotton, flax, and wool.
In the case of the Grand Vividus, it contains more horsehair than other Hästens mattress, which include the Classic Vividus, the second most expensive piece after Drake’s.
The Grand Vividus also has more springs and takes more time to make. It takes around 600 hours to create it and needs four certified craftsmen.
Adolfsson explains how the springs in the luxury mattress make a difference.
“The springs are like…just imagine that you’re a huge rock star and you stage dive into the crowd. If you’re in an arena and everyone reaches up to catch you, you feel like you’re floating, and you don’t feel each individual hand. But if you try that with five friends, it’s a different story.”
The store made ten of this mattress initially and they are looking to finish 12 in a year. The pandemic contributes to the slow process and they are anticipating further delays.
This explains why Drake said that his master bedroom, which occupies 3,200 square feet, is his favorite room in his mansion.
He explained that his bed “lets [him] float,” which is definitely because of his luxury mattress.
With a mattress that costs more than the average single-family home, it should be that awesome.
