She even shaved her head!
A woman from the town of Widnes in Cheshire, England has sparked outrage after lying about having terminal cancer.
In a social media post, 29-year-old Toni Stranden claimed she has cancer which has started to spread on her body. She even said she only had “two months to live.”
To make the scam look more convincing, she went as far as shaving her head so others would think she’s undergoing treatment.
Engaged to her fiancé Jim, hearts were touched when Stranden said she wanted her father Derek, who actually had cancer, to see her get married before he died.
Eventually, a GoFundMe page was created by friends where they successfully raised more than £8,000. for the wedding.
Stranden later admitted she was never ill and apologized to friends via text, saying:
“I am very sorry for all of this, I am embarrassed and heartbroken and right now I am struggling. There is so much I want to say but struggling where to start.
“At the minute I don’t know if Jim and I will be getting a divorce, I don’t blame him if he does and I don’t blame you both if this is the end, I completely understand and will have to somehow move on through it.”
As a result of the fraud, she ended up getting a jail time of five months, BBC reported.
During the sentencing, District Judge Nicholas Sanders declared:
“You continued to embellish that tissue of lies, saying you had weeks to live. I don’t accept you couldn’t stop.
“Not only did you not stop, you made it worse by giving newspaper interviews to engender public sympathy… Every right thinking member of society would be appalled by your behavior.”
