Watching the heads trying to go in different directions is just plain creepy!
A two-headed baby copperhead was discovered in a northern Virginia resident this month, which is a very rare finding. The unusual serpent was captured by Virginia Wildlife Management & Control and is now being looked after by an experienced private reptile keeper.
Experts revealed that both heads deliver a venomous bite. However, snake expert JD Kleopfer said that creatures with two heads don’t really live that long since both heads wanted different things.
Kleopfer wrote on Facebook:
“Wild bicephalic snakes are exceptionally rare because they just don’t live that long. Too many challenges living day to day with two heads.”
In the video taken by Kleopfer, the two heads can be clearly seen wanting to go in different directions. The body was going straight, but the heads were pulling each other on the opposite sides. The clip was the perfect example of the snake expert’s earlier explanation.
The gruesome discovery was made by Stephanie Myers who said: “I wanted to look away but couldn’t stop looking at it.”
A spokesperson for the veterinary hospital said:
“It appears as though the left head is more dominant – it’s generally more active and responsive to stimulus … Radiographs revealed that the two-headed snake has two tracheas [the left one is more developed], two esophaguses [the right one is more developed], and the two heads share one heart and one set of lungs. Based on the anatomy, it would be better for the right head to eat, but it may be a challenge since the left head appears more dominant.”
The two-week-old two-headed copperhead still mostly eats insects and was around six inches long. Fully grown copperheads can measure up to 18-36 inches. With a little luck and care, they hope to eventually bring the snake to a zoo for an exhibit.
