Cats are said to have 9 lives because of their uncanny ability to escape harm. But this one cat seems to have a whole lot more than just 9 lives!
Nutmeg may look like your typical tabby cat. You can tell that he’s a little more advanced in age because he’s not as playful and energetic as kittens. But hey, we bet you wouldn’t have guessed that Nutmeg just celebrated his 31st birthday. That’s about the age of 141 in human years!
26 years ago, Nutmeg chose his forever home when he showed up in the backyard of the Finlay family. He was taken in back in 1990 as a stray who befriended the Finlays’ cat, Spice. The family took Nutmeg to the vet to treat an abscess on his neck, and this is where they learned that Nutmeg was around 5 years old.
At 31 years old, he’s a firm contender for being the world’s oldest cat. However, to qualify for the Guinness Records, the Finlays have to show documents to prove his age. That’s obviously not an easy feat, but they’re working on it.
Last year, Nutmeg suffered from a serious stroke. But thanks to his loving family, he’s up and running again. This is why people are wondering how many lives Nutmeg has!
The Finlays say:
“He is not our cat, we are his humans and he never lets us forget that. Maybe that is the secret to his long and happy life.”
