Young Woman Caned In Front Of Crowd For Standing Too Close To Her Boyfriend

A 21-year-old woman has been publicly caned for getting “too close” to her boyfriend in the Indonesian province of Aceh. The public humiliation is the latest punishment in the conservative region, which strictly implements Sharia law in full.

The young woman’s boyfriend was also punished in front of the people of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh Province. The “criminals” were put through the harrowing ordeal for breaking ultra-conservative rules.

The woman was dragged in front of a crown and was forced to kneel. A masked man then arrived to give her the punishment. A female police officer positions the young woman as men in the background take pictures of the punishment

Two female officers then forcefully dragged the battered young woman from the ground after her punishment.

Her boyfriend also suffered the same consequence for breaking such a rule. Photos of him clearly showed his agony as he was whipped by an enforcer.

While Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country, Aceh is the only province that practices sharia law.

According to reports, a lot of women are being flogged in Aceh in recent years. The northern province fully applied the Sharia law in their system in 2001.

Everybody has the right to choose their religion. Local official, Bakhtiar, noted in a previous punishment, that if you can’t deal with the laws of Islam, then the best option is to leave the province.

He said:

“It’s not to be laughed at or watched. But this is a lesson for us all to enforce complete Islamic law in Banda Aceh … If there are people who do not agree with Islamic law, please get out of Aceh.”

Other than Islam, Indonesia recognizes only five faiths, which are Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Roman Catholicism, and Protestantism. Most people in Indonesia are Muslim, and it has the most populous believers of the said religion.
